Indiana Bioptic Laws 

Bioptic are permitted for driving and to pass the licensure test. 

  • Visual Acuity: 20/40 in the better eye, with or without corrective lenses.  
  • 20/50 in the better eye: restricted license daytime only.  
  • 20/70 in each eye with best correction: daytime only.  
  • Visual field: no less than 120 degrees horizontally.
  • Bioptic Telescope Lenses are permitted for best corrected acuity as low as 20/200, with some restrictions. Visual Acuity must reach 20/40 with telescope (any 4X bioptic or with 5.5X Beecher or others by approval of the BMV).
  • Color vision adequate to identify traffic lights.
  • Stable eye condition; good mental attitude.
  • Evaluation by driver educator, approval of BMV medical review board.
  • 30 hours of driver training and pass extended road test.
  • Night driving can be obtained on case-by-case basis with night driving evaluation.
