Nighttime Bioptic Driving Considerations

Some eye pathologies may allow an individual to have nighttime driving privileges. These individuals are screened by their Low Vision Optometrists before receiving permission to attempt these privileges.  The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles sometimes allows individuals to complete this evaluation during their training period.  Otherwise, the driver must have several months of incident free driving before attempting to gain their nighttime privilege.

When an individual drives for a nighttime evaluation, the session is scheduled for twilight to nighttime lighting. Weather conditions are noted.

Special attention is paid to the varying lighting conditions present during the drive.  Some locations have simulated daylight street lights, and other locations are more rural with minimally painted lane lines.

When driving at night, an evaluator will ask the driver to comment on other roadway users, especially pedestrians.  If there is any question on the driver not being able to identify these hazards, nighttime driving would not be an option.

Other considerations for nighttime driving are the ability to recover from the glare of oncoming headlights.  Some drivers can do well until this hazard is encountered.

Results of the nighttime evaluation are submitted to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Medical Advisory Committee. Nighttime driving is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
